Philinter ESL Teacher Ken: Motivation is important!

Working in Philinter as an ESL teacher has been a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for Teacher Ken. And that has something to do with the people he meets everyday inside the classroom–his students. But how does he teach his students? He shares one very good way of doing it.

ABOUT PHILINTER

Philinter is a Korean-owned-and-managed English language school in Lapu-lapu City, which is just about 30 minutes away from Cebu City. Its name is derived from the two words, “philosophy” and “interaction.” It has been operating for more than twelve years in the ESL academe, a hint on its credibility in teaching.

In teaching English, “motivation plays a big role.”

Teacher Ken believes in the power of motivation in studying. If the student is not motivated to study, then how can the student learn? (Aye!)

MAKE THE STUDENT COMFORTABLE.

His idea of motivating his students to study English starts with making the student comfortable studying with him.
(I definitely agree with Teacher Ken. Being comfortable studying with your teacher breaks a lot of barriers of learning, like being timid to ask questions from the teacher!)

KNOW THE STUDENT’S PURPOSE FOR STUDYING.

Afterwards, he finds out the purpose of the student for studying English.

If a student studies English for work, then holding a serious class and giving a lot of homework to the student would definitely be important. But doing the same thing would not be a good idea if the student simply wants to use English to make friends. In that case, he would come up with a different approach. Probably, more practical conversations on certain topics would be more helpful to the student.

DISCOVER THE STUDENT’S INTERESTS.

Weaving the student’s interests into teaching English can make the class enjoyable and thus make English fun to learn! Teacher Ken believes that there are multiple ways to teach and learn English. A student who is into movies can learn the language from watching English movies. If the student is fond of spicy food, then including such topic to the lesson would definitely spice up the class. (Maybe, it would even be good to use some food props. ^_- )

Wow. This is indeed a lot of effort for Teacher Ken, considering that he deals with different students everyday. But he says, he has enjoyed teaching and he finds joy and satisfaction in seeing his students improve.

Teacher Ken believes that by successfully motivating the student, he or she can have better odds in learning English quickly and effectively. (By the way, his students say he’s good at motivating them.)

Indeed, in my opinion, it is important to enjoy what you are learning. Actually, if you enjoy what you are learning, you retain it better in your memory.
